הולך לפספס את המקום הזה!
כל כך הרבה שינויים. ענק גם. חנות Ulta הקרובה ביותר בסן רפאל היא / היה כמה קילומטרים מדרום לי, כמו גם אנחנו רק נהיגה כביש 101 בסוף השבוע האחרון כשראיתי כי החנות נסגר, נראה כמו לצמיתות. היו סימנים ענקיים “סגורים” בחלונות. רמזות נוצצות. ?

אני כל כך בוטס מאז ניצל לבלות שעות נודדות סביב המיקום מראש covid. היו להם מגוון פנטסטי של מזגנים, כמו גם מוצרים סטיילינג מקצה גבוה יותר לתקציב. אחד הדברים המועדפים שלי לעשות היה בדק את התוויות על מוצרי השיער …

הדבר המועדף שלי לעשות שם היה לשחק עם הצג בושם byredo שלהם. הייתי הולך כמו גם ריסוס כל ריח שהם היו על כל אחד, כמו כל סנטימטר מרובע של עור על הגוף שלי, בתקווה שאמצא בושם חדש כמו הרבה יותר מאשר מים צוענים (אבל בסופו של דבר, תמיד אהבתי מים צוענים ביותר; ללכת דמות).

I’m no expert on face primers.  I don’t have issues with foundations lasting on my skin, and I don’t have skin texture concerns that primers typically address (large pore, uneven skin, excessive oiliness).  Up until a few years ago, I never used a face primer but I’ve since incorporated it into my skin routine. I mainly use face primers as another layer of protection against the elements.

Today I’ll review 2 primers that I own, and they’re probably not the more popular brands that are typically reviewed online (Smashbox, Benefit, Hourglass) but they’re good for what need.

Shiseido Refining makeup Primer ($35 for 30ml) is a pretty tame primer – it doesn’t necessarily fill in pores or control oil, but it does provide a nice canvas for the application of makeup on top.  It’s not overly silicone-y in texture – it feels like a light lotion and has no scent.  It has a pinky beige tone which has a brightening effect (it does not leave a pink cast once blended).  As with most primers, a little bit of product is all that’s required. I dot this on my cheeks, forehead, nose and chin and blend.  I really like this and have repurchased it multiple times.  A tube will last me around 6 months.

Of interesting note: this primer is sold in Canada without any SPF claims because Shiseido opted not to have it certified in Canada, however it contains exactly the same ingredients as the us version (the active sunscreen ingredients are a mixture of chemical (octinoxate) and mineral (titanium dioxide) and claims an SPF of 21.

Cover FX SPF 30 protection Primer ($38 for 30ml) is a recent discovery.  And by discovery, I mean that I literally discovered this tube in my closet inside a shopping bag underneath a pile of towels.  I think my pal gave this to me – I do not recall ever purchasing this.  The expiry date on this tube is Nov 2015 so it’s still fresh.  It contains a concoction of chemical sunscreens as its SPF which isn’t my favourite, but as an extra protection underneath my mineral sunscreen, I don’t mind too much.

This is a clear silicone-y product, typical of primers that fill in pores and blur lines and it does both quite well (it’s nearly invisible when applied so I had to circle where I applied it to the back of my hand).  It also does seem to help to keep my t-zone from getting as shiny as early.  It does have a sunscreen type of smell which is typical of avobenzone.  I like how this primer looks but I don’t think it’s good for my skin – I noticed that on the days I used this, I developed a few red dots on my face.  I can’t 100% attribute it to this primer since it is also allergy season, so anything goes with my face!  But I will likely reserve this primer for days when I need my foundation to last a long time. I’d likely not buy this once I am finished the tube.  I have a cosmetics pouch full of sample sized primers I need to try – the top of my list is the Clarins instant Smooth Perfecting Touch primer, of which I have a couple of gwp jars.

Even though both of these primers contain sunscreen, I would not consider them to have sufficient coverage to be used as my sole sun protection.  The tiny amount of primer needed to function as primers render them useless as sunscreens.  I always apply a separate sunscreen on my face regardless if my moisturizer, primer or foundation contain sunscreen.  The order in which I apply my skincare, pre-makeup is as follows:

It may sound like I wear a lot of layers – and I suppose I do – but I allow each step to absorb before applying the next layer – they don’t look cakey once all blended.

I briefly mentioned my Club Monaco #02 eye shadow clean in my clean stock post.  I called the brush as one that I would run back into a burning building to rescue.

Club Monaco Beauty was a full variety of makeup sold at Club Monaco (CM) stores in Canada as well as at Sephora in the US. [Fun fact: Club Monaco was a Canadian company until they offered it to Ralph Lauren in 1999] The makeup line included signature products such as the notorious Monica Lewinsky lipstick (Sheer Lipstick in Glaze), Eye Grease (cream eye shadows), as well as Cheek Dew (cream blushes) – all in smooth cleaned silver as well as frosted lucite packaging. I feel they were ahead of the time since no other makeup lines in the early 2000’s offered products like theirs. From the line, I had an eye shadow palette, a powder foundation, a concealer, a handful of lipsticks as well as lipglosses, as well as even a metal eye lash comb (I desire I had saved the lash comb however it wasn’t טוב באופן יוצא מן הכלל). I might go on about the history of CM however that’s for one more time! Today I’m right here to talk about the eye shadow clean #02 which I obtained from the eye shadow palette:

What makes this clean so special is that not only is Club Monaco Beauty no longer available – making this clean somewhat of a collector’s item – the high quality of this clean is outstanding.  I’ve had this clean for at least 10 years and it has retained its shape as well as all its hairs.

The bristles are of natural bristles (in fact, back then, great high quality synthetic brushes were a rarity) with a smooth frosted lucite handle.  The shape is a traditional eye shadow shader, with densely packed hairs as well as a somewhat tapered tip.  The most unique element of the CM clean is the narrow shape – around 1.0cm wide – as well as its firm hairs, making it perfect for packing on powder eye shadow onto the lid.

In recent years, I began looking for brushes with similar shape so I might have a rotation of shader brushes.  The closest I’ve ever discovered were from Bourjois (which then I prompty bought 5 as back-ups) as well as Sephora (Pro little shadow #15) – however neither have as firm hairs as the CM.

I’ve put the MAC 239 shading clean and Shu Uemura natural clean 10 next to them for comparison – both of them are much wider than the CM, however, the Shu clean does have a similar firmness as the CM.

Meanwhile, I still kept an eye out on the internet with makeup switch forums as well as ebay for the actual Club Monaco brush.  Would you believe that a person evening I typed in “Club Monaco brushes” into ebay as well as it turned up a listing for three brand new eye shadow brushes?  And would you believe the listing was $10 for all 3?  (The shipping expense twice that, however that’s typical to Canada)  It was so odd, a lady in the us had these brushes for many years as well as never utilized them as well as lastly decided to offer them.  While the #02 clean was not among the 3 that I received, it was amazing to get my hands on other sizes.  I added #05, #06 as well as #07 to my collection:

My favourite of these is #06 since it is the most similar to my original #02. The #07 clean has different hairs than the others – softer – as well as is my least favourite since it doesn’t pick up eye shadow as well.

I’m SO happy with my finds!  I’m now on the search for Club Monaco deal with brushes!
